Air Chamber Lubricants
for Spring-Piston Air Guns
The air compression chamber in spring-piston air guns (by far the most popular type) is that part of the main powerplant where the actual air compression takes place when the piston is moved forward by the mainspring in firing. In other words, it is the area in air guns ahead of the piston. The seal on the piston must remain lubricated to increase efficiency, reduce friction, create the tightest air seal, and prevent seal wear. When a magnum spring-piston airgun is fired, the air ahead of the piston is rapidly compressed. As this air is compressed, its temperature rises to as high as 2,000 degrees for a fraction of a second. It is imperative for this reason that ONLY high flash point lubricants be used.
This requirement alone eliminates almost all petroleum based oils and most synthetics lubes used in regular firearms or non-spring-piston air guns from consideration. Most lubricants not SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED for use in spring-piston air guns can cause dieseling - a rapid ignition of the lubricant that can quickly damage air guns and even injure the airgunner. Therefore use only specialized synthetic or organic oils which have been approved by the airgun manufacturer. Approved air chamber lubricants are carefully selected for high flash point, proper lubricity, and lack of impurities.
